Mental Health in Children

Mental Health has been in the news throughout this year.  Nobody is immune to the possibility of having a mental health issue.  It can creep up on anyone at anytime.  Never be complacent about mental health and always seek help, preferably at an early stage, whenever you are struggling. The reason seeking help early on is a good idea is because negative responses and behaviours have less opportunity to take hold and become deeply embedded and habit forming.

It helps to nip issues in the bud quickly so they don’t fester. I realise this is not always possible but for many things it is.  I see a lot of children in my work for issues such as anxiety, confidence, fears and phobias, health issues and self harm.  We must do our very best to look after their mental health. Keep the dialogue open with them.

Schools too have a part to play in this, which I know is a big ask because teachers are already under a lot of pressure.  I had a conversation recently with an employee at a local school regarding one of their pupils I was working with and I was very impressed with her attitude towards helping.  This can make a huge difference to children that are struggling.

The dialogue is the most important thing because it is when children shut down that it becomes more difficult for parents and teachers to understand what is happening.  They may also become reluctant to interact with a therapist.

I like to make therapy a positive experience for adults and children alike.  I love getting to know people.  I love that my studio has a calming and friendly ambience with my gorgeous Colour Mirrors bottles.  Adults love these bottles and children are mesmerised by them. So therapy feels like fun.  Children do great with the therapies I use.

One of the things most people don’t recognise in themselves is how amazing they are.  We need to ensure that today’s children know they are fab so we can build a society where people believe in themselves.  Far too many people doubt themselves. If they are self-assured, have self-belief and confidence it goes a long way to not letting life’s challenges become the very events that hold them back.

Where parents are separated it is important to put the child first and the parental differences aside.  Children feed off the vibe of parents.

Bullying can still be a problem issue in society but, as I’ve said before, it is important to understand the person doing the bullying as well as help the person who has been bullied.  When someone bullies, there is usually a reason behind this.

When a child expresses anger then talk to them. Find out why they are angry.  Most importantly listen.  If a child has behaviour issues, there would usually be a reason for this.

When I started this post, I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to talk about but perhaps because I’ve worked with a fair few youngsters this I put the focus on children.  But it goes to show that mental health is an issue for all and not just adults.
