Do You Struggle with Escalators, Heights, Gaps in Platforms, Balance Problems or Spatial Challenges?

Did you know that sometimes when people have a fear of heights or feel unstable crossing platforms such as getting on a train or tube, or with stairs that have gaps and other similar issues, this may be related to their primitive and postural reflexes.  In particular the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) is linked to such challenges.

Therefore, even though these issues can be overcome using methods such as hypnotherapy or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), there can be instances when it is also appropriate to work on integrating these reflexes.

The large majority of the integration process should be completed at 9 months old and should be fully integrated at around 3 1/2 years of age.  There are many reasons why this reflex (and others) either is not integrated or becomes active, such as stress, trauma, illness, injury (especially of neck or back) or having missed out on certain phases of development such as insufficient floor play.   The result of an unintegrated or active TLR causes difficulties in judging space, depth, distance and/or speed.  There are many other possible challenges when the TLR is active including (an active TLR does not necessarily result in having all of these difficulties as we often learn to compensate for the challenges we face):

  • Weak Neck Muscles
  • Difficulty holding the head up
  • Poor auditory processing (therefore verbal learning or instructions are difficult to process)
  • Tire when lifting arms up
  • Motion sickness and other issues such as vertigo and fear of heights
  • Hunched posture
  • Balance problems
  • Spatial challenges
  • Sequencing challenges
  • Coordination problems
  • Tense leg muscles, may toe walk
  • Low muscle tone with over-flexible joints
  • Eye muscles not working efficiently (may be cross eyed)
  • Low self esteem

As you can see that is quite some list but the key issue is if you or your child are experiencing any of these challenges and improving them could make your or their life better then you can address this using Rhythmic Movement Training (“RMT”).  As an RMT Consultant I am able to work with you to address these challenges.

RMT can help with many issues including behaviourial, OCD, postural, co-ordination, ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia, anxiety, insecurity and many other issues.  There is no age limit to using helping with these issues.
