Enhancing Early Childhood Development

If you look at a new born baby they have very little movement control.  This is most noticeable by the fact they cannot hold their own head up.  However, through natural development after approximately 2 months old a baby is usually able to hold his or her head up. Having said that, to some degree, a child’s development will happen according to their own unique timetable so don’t panic if they take a little longer to achieve this.

Given modern day developments in technology and equipment, babies and infants spend a fair amount of time with their spine curved and head propped up in car seats or other types of seats.  To help a baby develop the skill of holding their head up without help, it is important that they gain sufficient time playing and laying on the floor on both their front and back which allows them time to practice this and develop the brain and body connections.

This is one example of how important movement is in development for your child. This is all part of the primitive reflexes which are essential in development. In a well developed child, their primitive, infant and postural reflexes will become active and integrated and you will have a well developed child, in many areas from social, behavioural, physically, co-ordination, balance, health, educational and so on.

However, life sometimes is not so straightforward and for various reasons some reflexes may not become integrated or after being integrated become active causing issues which you may not have associated with part of their development.  This is not through any fault of your own, it was just something you were not aware of.

Some of the reasons why a child may not have had an opportunity to develop these reflexes are:

  • Difficult or traumatic birth
  • Low birth weight
  • Premature birth
  • Illness
  • Trauma
  • Lack of floor play or opportunity for movement
  • Injury during infant years
  • Omitted the crawling stage

When a child starts school, the comparison to other children starts to become more obvious and this can be where the stress starts for both child and parents when their child is either struggling with some aspect of schoolwork or has behavioural, anger, social, postural or physical issues.  Problems occur when the child is seen lazy when in fact they may actually find it very difficult to concentrate due to lack of development.  This sometimes causes the child to become distracted and then is considered naughty or they get so frustrated they misbehave.  By addressing their reflexes, we are able to help address these areas of development.  This in turns helps to build your child’s confidence and self esteem and helps them throughout their school life into adulthood.

The good news is that it is never too late to integrate reflexes. I work with both children and adults to help with integration of their reflexes.  In fact I do some of the movements daily myself.   Although adults develop their own subconscious methods of hiding some of their unintegrated or active reflexes, these can still causes difficulties in reading, writing, postural (leading to pain), over flexible joints, balance, co-ordination and many other issues in adulthood.

The Process

The process involves you completing some questionnaires in relation to your child, this is followed by the first appointment where we start the process of integrating the reflexes.  I will then prescribe a few exercises for your child to do.  This is done in consultation with both you and your child so that your child is happy with the exercises they are doing.  This usually takes approximately a minute of your time a day in the early stages.  Usually appointments are approximately every 4 weeks.  This is a process which must be done at a steady and sensible rate.  Unlike going to the gym where it feels that doing more exercises is beneficial, it is actually more beneficial with Rhythmic Movement Training to progress at a rate that is right for your child under my guided supervision.
