Fear of flying can happen for various reasons. These may include:
- Feel of losing control
- Trust issues
- Learned behaviour (eg you learn to have the fear from a parent who has a fear of flying)
- A trauma – eg an air crash or bad landing or feeling ill on a flight
- Media sensationalism, such as reporting plane crashes or missing planes
The latter, media sensationalism, is a reason that many people are increasingly living in fear. We now have 24-7 news and I don’t see this as a good thing. The best thing you can do is turn off your newsfeeds – let’s face it, when are you going to hear good news? News gives us a unrealistic view of the world and dangers. Have you ever considered how many flights travel through the air and safely reach their destination across the world every single day? Of course things going well is not considered ‘news’. Hence we are constantly told about negative events.
If you must watch the news, keep it to once a day. You really don’t need reminding of negative events hour after hour and bear in mind that the large majority of planes land safely, completely trauma free.
Hypnotherapy and other techniques working with the subconscious mind such as Emotional Freedom Technique work with the subconscious mind to overcome fears and phobias. The biggest problem with fears and phobias is that, because the brain ‘pattern matches’ (ie sees that other events are similar), it puts you on your guard more often and therefore in the fight and flight response, causing you to be anxious or fearful in other circumstances so these types of issues need to be addressed as soon as possible so they do not impact your life.
“I just wanted to write to let you know that things are going well. I’m feeling very much more balanced and settled within myself regardless of the situation.
Your work with me was not only effective but hugely enjoyable thanks to your warmth and professionalism.
I’m sure you’ll agree, we covered much ground (and depth!) which has been of massive benefit to my personal growth and a catalyst for many other positive changes in my life.
I now also look forward to doing as much flying as possible!”
